The simple answer from my perspective is NO!
A strange statement to be made by a highly trained plus extremely knowledgeable Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist plus Master Practitioner of NLP is it not?
Perhaps but then again I think it is best to be open, to be honest and to look at evidence. Clinical or Therapeutic Hypnosis can be a very useful tool when applied in conjunction with Psychotherapy methods.
In effect this is what Clinical Hypnotherapy is, it is the use of hypnosis combined with therapies to affect a change in the thinking, feeling and behaving of a client or patient.
So it begs the question does it not?
Are other forms of Talking Therapies, magic bullets or a cure all?
Clearly they are not and therefore if they are not, then simply adding hypnosis into the mix will not create a cure all or the so called magic bullet effect, will it?
Now my belief is that the use of hypnosis can allow quicker changes to occur, in the thinking, feeling and acting when well applied methods for cognitive and behavioural change are applied within it. The use of hypnosis appears to magnify or intensify the process of change but it is not a cure all nor a magic bullet.
In fact in our training we as Clinical Hypnotherapists are taught not to use the word "cure" and to use instead "resolution of symptoms." Life is fluid, it is ever changing and thus resolution of symptoms is a much more accurate phrase.
Nothing is static, the seasons come and go, the sun rises and sets, days, weeks, years change and so do we as human beings, hopefully we grow in knowledge, understanding and wisdom and learn new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving to help us on our journey ahead but from time to time old patterns may emerge once more and we can either flounder or we can utilise our new knowledge and skills to help us to grow still further.
A great Hypnotherapist is a person whom you trust, whom you have good rapport with, who you learn from gaining knowledge and skills plus tools to help and assist you throughout your life, they are not just somebody who treats you without explaining how you can help yourself too.
For example, I educate my clients as to how the brain functions, what are brainwaves, how hypnosis works, what it can help and what it cannot, how pattern matching or the law of association applies and more as well as teaching them self hypnosis and breathing techniques and how to deal with negative thinking and much more, whist also treating them with well applied Therapeutic Hypnosis and Psychotherapy.
