I don't know about you, however, I have definitely felt more pressurised over the last year!
What with all the changes, the new Laws and Guidelines, the constant chopping and changing of restrictions. It appears to be a never ending story full of twists & turns. Plus there is confusion inbuilt too.
Toxic Stress, the new Buzzword for Distress or bad stress, is most definitely on the rise these days, even more than before and I used to think it was high enough even then. We live in a sea of Toxic Stress in the UK. No wonder millions upon millions of prescriptions are written every year for Anxiolytics or Anti Anxiety medications. That doesn't include prescriptions for Anti Depressants nor prescriptions for Insomnia, nor prescriptions for Chronic Pain, all often exacerbated by negative stress (anxiety.)
Distress is increasing significantly in the UK and the rest of the world especially in highly developed, plus technologically advanced nations.
Of course not all stress is bad, we need stress to motivate us even to get out of bed in the morning. Positive stress was termed Eustress because it is beneficial stress. This Eustress motivates plus energises you. It is healthy stress.
It is when incoming demands exceed our coping capacity that we feel overloaded which leads to overwhelm and this is most definitely Toxic Stress or Distress. There is a lot of that these days, generated in 2020 onward.
This Distress or Toxic Stress leads to imbalance in our lives or our homeostasis goes out of kilter. The human physiology is always aiming to maintain homeostasis or balance, just look at how heart rates rise and fall, blood pressure goes up and down, temperature increases and decreases dependant on temperature and infection will create a fever. Everything is being maintained and sustained in an orderly manner, with balance or equilibrium being the aim.
Unfortunately Toxic Stress throws things out of balance. Ultimately Toxic Stress can affect our heart rate, our blood pressure, our cholesterol levels etc. So negative stress is not simply mental because Mind guides Brain and Brain guides Body. The body is an outcropping of the Mind, in other words a person who is very stressed mentally will have a body that shows that.
In addition Toxic Stress leads to Anti-Homeostatic behaviours including:
Excess consumption of alcohol or smoking more or using illegal drugs.
Increased use of medicines including Anti Anxiety and Anti Depressant meds.
Increased consumption of fatty foods and high calorific foods, the so called comfort foods.
Gambling and other addictive behaviours.
The list goes on and on!!
So Stress Management is not a luxury it is an absolute necessity.
