Research finds that smoking can cause damage in minutes! Read on to find out how:

Smoking takes minutes to cause damage, research finds

Smoking can only take minutes to damage a person's body, as the chemicals that can cause cancer rapidly settle in the body.

That's according to research undertaken by scientists in America; the results of which were published in 'Chemical Research in Toxicology'. Although the dangers of smoking have been widely acknowledged for years, the immediacy with which the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes took effect was not confirmed.
However scientists found that the chemicals, named polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) took only 15-30 minutes after inhalation to be modified into dangerous bodies, according to the European Lung Foundation.

"The study is unique," claimed Professor Stephen Hecht, a scientist partly responsible for the find; "It is the first to investigate human metabolism of a PAH specifically delivered by inhalation in cigarette smoke, without interference by other sources of exposure such as air pollution or the diet." "The results reported here should serve as a stark warning to those who considering starting to smoke cigarettes," he added on BBC News.
The research has been welcomed by anti-smoking organisations, such as Action on Smoking and Health, whose director of policy, Martin Dockrell, said: "The chilling thing about this research is that it shows just how early the very first stages of that process begin - within 30 minutes of a single cigarette. The process starts early but it is never too late to quit."

One in Seven Brits at Risk of Stroke due to Stress! The figure is higher for women! Read on:

One in seven Brits at risk of having a stroke, due to stress

One in seven British people are "extremely stressed", putting them at increased risk of having a stroke, reports Medical News Today.
One in five females and one in ten males believed their stress levels were "out of control" according to recent research, which was collated after 2,000 Brits were surveyed by the Stroke Association. High stress levels can cause a range of distressing illness, including stroke, and can put a strain on sufferers' hearts and blood pressure.

"The research is incredibly worrying," claims a representative for the Stroke Association, James Beeby. "[It] emphasises the need for the public to be aware of the dangers of stroke - the UK's third biggest killer."

The figures were collated as part of the Stroke Associations' campaign to highlight the dangers, after statistics showed stroke killed 67,000 people in England and Wales last year, according to the Daily Mail.

With the increasing pressures the 21st century has brought to Britons - including financial and work pressures - it is not surprising the figures are so high. Those experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety should consider consulting a hypnotherapy directory to find a professional therapist who can help them work through their issues.

Although feelings of stress and anxiety can appear to be provoked by outside entities, it can also be that underlying emotional triggers are adding to the feelings. Therapists can work with their patients to identify these and talk through them, finding ways in which to resolve any problems and ultimately lead to a more relaxed, happier lifestyle.
