Which methods are used?

Douglas Clark Clinical Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy uses a wide variety of methods that can be specifically tailored to your exact needs.  A complete personalised service is offered to clients depending on their individual requirements.

Is the client in control?

At all times the client retains awareness of surroundings and retains full control of their mind and body.  Even under Hypnosis a person retains full control.  In fact all hypnosis is effectively self hypnosis and hypnosis is simply a pleasant state similar to day dreaming.  You cannot be forced into hypnosis and you cannot get stuck within it.  Also you cannot be made to do or reveal anything that you do not want to.

You can terminate the hypnotic trance at any time you wish, since you retain full control, however, just as when day dreaming or dreaming at night, you may feel so relaxed that you choose to remain in hypnosis but if you had to attend to a safety issue or deperately needed to go to the toilet, you could simply open your eyes and get up and attend to what needed attending to.

In fact hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we all go into and come out of in our lives.  Watching TV is in fact a state of hypnosis.  So is driving on automatic pilot.  The body is relaxed and at ease in hypnosis whilst the mind is alert.  This is best described as a state of relaxation and concentration.  At this point the critical part of the mind is put to rest and the unconscious mind or subconscious mind becomes more receptive and can accept and store the positive suggestions for well being and subsequently act upon them. For example the intellect and critical mind is turned down and it becomes easier for a person to do things that seem difficult or cause anxiety or fear. In general the conscious mind likes to analyze and reject, but in hypnosis it is put to rest so new thoughts and ideas that promote wellness can be put into the unconscious mind Throughout the hypnotic experience, however, a person is in total control of themselves, they can speak, move and can awaken whenever they wish. In fact at some points during hypnosis, advanced hypnotherapists such as myself will even have a client answering questions whilst still remaining relaxed.  This shows that conscious free will is still retained within hypnosis.  A person as I have stated above cannot be made to do anything or say anything that contradicts their own moral and ethical behaviour.  One always retains free will and an awareness of one's surroundings but at the same time one feels much more relaxed.

Hypnosis is a tool to enable psychotherapy to take place.  To fully utilise this tool, the hypnotist has to be skilled in a range of psychotherapeutic techniques or methods, only then in my opinion can they call themselves a Hypnotherapist.  Hypnosis on it's own simply equates to a relaxed state.  It is the treatment that is carried out in this state which is the most vital part and for that one needs to see a well trained therapist with experience.  I have trained with some of the best Schools and Colleges of Clinical Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy as well as being a member of the main Professional Associations, thus you can rest assured in the professionalism of myself and my treatments.
